If you haven’t noticed, the way we search has changed. Not only are we asking for information differently, but the results we’re shown look different, too.
In the past, you may have typed “black cocktail dress” into Google and browsed through pages of website results. Now, that search might happen through voice, ChatGPT, TikTok, or YouTube. You might even ask for something more specific, like “knee-length black cocktail dress with sequins, suitable for an awards night.”
Google knows this shift. Its goal for the 8.5 billion searches each year remains the same: “to organise the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.” But how it delivers that information is evolving.
Today, you’re likely to see a summary at the top of your search results. This is called an AI Overview (or AIO). It gives users a direct answer without needing to click. AI Overviews are just one part of Google’s broader Search Generative Experience (SGE) and a sign of how search is becoming more conversational, visual, and intent-based.
What’s changed?
1. Search is more fragmented
People no longer rely solely on a browser and Google. They ask Siri, browse TikTok, look for reviews on Reddit, or get a detailed explanation via ChatGPT. As a result, search behaviour is now spread across multiple platforms.
2. AI Overviews are the new “position zero”
Increasingly, instead of a list of websites or a featured snippet, users are shown an AI-generated summary of the most relevant information. For now, these tend to appear on informational queries rather than branded or transactional searches. But this is still prime real estate in search.
3. Clicks are falling, but visibility is rising
We’re seeing what’s being called “The Great Decoupling”: a trend where your brand may appear more often in search, but users click through less. That doesn’t mean you’re not being seen; it means you’re influencing people earlier in their decision-making journey.
4. Your brand reputation matters more than ever
Search engines now prioritise trusted, structured, human-led content. Brands that show up consistently across platforms, with original, helpful information, are the ones being featured in AI Overviews.
What this means for your business
- You need to show up wherever your customers are searching, not just on Google.
- You need structured, helpful content that answers real questions.
- Your website and social platforms must work together to build brand trust.
The good news is that Google has confirmed you don’t need to change your SEO strategy to appear in AI Overviews. But that doesn’t mean we ignore what’s changing.
How we’re responding
As a content-led digital marketing agency, we understand the importance of blending strategy with storytelling. We’ve always believed that content is the foundation of discoverability and, now more than ever, it’s proving true.
We’ve responded to the changing search landscape by implementing:
An optimised content strategy.
We know that high-quality, human-led content remains central to visibility. That’s why our content strategy focuses on answering questions clearly and directly, in formats that suit both users and AI. Structured blogs, logical formatting, and informative headlines help ensure content is both discoverable and useful.
In-depth performance tracking.
Understanding how your content performs in this new AI-driven landscape is key. We monitor changes in visibility and engagement through Google Analytics 4 and Search Console, tracking where your audience is coming from and how often your brand is appearing in search results — even when those results don’t lead to a click.
Conversational search tactics.
Search is now more natural and conversational. We’re adapting content to reflect the way people ask questions — using full sentences, more specific phrases, and clearer context. This helps your content appear in the kinds of queries people are asking across AI tools and voice search.
Increased social visibility.
As social platforms become part of the search experience, we’re focused on helping your business show up well beyond your website. That includes refining your Google Business and Bing profiles, and ensuring your social media presence is discoverable, consistent and aligned with your brand voice.
Strengthened structured data and technical SEO.
Behind the scenes, we continue to focus on the fundamentals. From schema markup and alt tags to mobile responsiveness and site speed, we ensure that your website structure supports both a great user experience and efficient search indexing.
Why this matters
Search is no longer about ranking first. It’s about being seen, recognised, and trusted, whether someone clicks or not.
By staying ahead of algorithm shifts, content trends and audience behaviour, we help our clients stay visible at every stage of the search journey. From first exposure in an AI Overview to final purchase on your website, we ensure your message is clear, consistent and discoverable.
