Have you received a phone call, text or WhatsApp message from Google asking you to confirm details on your Google Business Profile (GBP)? If you did, don’t worry, it’s not a scam. It’s the latest way Google is working with you to ensure your details are up-to-date on its search platform.
It’s estimated that more than 70% of Australian profiles contain inaccurate or missing information, such as incorrect categories, outdated hours, or missing service details. It’s in Google’s best interests to address this, as it affects local search algorithms and user experience.
How is Google using automation to update Business Profile details?
Recently, Google started using automated phone calls and text messages to ensure your business information is listed correctly online. These automated calls and messages are sent to the number listed on your GBP, and will ask you to confirm information, such as your:
- Business contact details, including address and phone number.
- Business operating hours, including public holiday opening times.
To prevent account suspensions, ensure that all information you provide to Google is accurate and complies with its content policies.
If LEP Digital currently manages your SEO, you don’t need to worry about these automated checks, as we manage these changes on your behalf.
What will Google do with the information provided?
Any information you provide to Google via these phone calls and texts, including photos and posts, will automatically be added to your GBP.
Any new changes will then go through a second review by Google, which may take up to five business days. Once your profile has been updated, Google will send you an email notification.
If at any time you want to edit or remove the changes made to your profile as a result of these calls, you can do so online via your GBP login. You can also choose to opt out of automated calls and texts.
How to know if it’s a scam or not
It’s important to be vigilant when handing over any information to a third party. But how will you know if these requests are legitimately from Google?
Here are some tips to help you identify what a real Google call looks like:
- All automated Google calls are monitored and recorded for quality.
- Google will only ever ask you for information meant for public use, meaning a legitimate phone call would never ask you for bank details or personal information.
- An authentic call would never threaten to remove your GBP if you don’t pay special fees.
If any call or message asks you to share private information, provide bank details or uses threats, it’s likely a scam call. In these instances, hang up.
