Brace yourself, ads in ChatGPT are coming

For the past two years, the business world has watched OpenAI’s meteoric rise. We’ve integrated its API into our workflows, used its interface to draft our reports, and relied on its insights to brainstorm new products and services. Now, a major shift is approaching that will fundamentally change how businesses interact with the platform and its millions of users: OpenAI is officially bringing advertisements to ChatGPT.

As reported by Search Engine Roundtable, OpenAI is preparing to test ads within ChatGPT responses in the coming weeks.

What the rollout looks like

The integration of ads won’t be a free-for-all for advertisers. According to OpenAI, the testing phase will focus on the free tier and a new, low-cost subscription tier called ChatGPT Go (priced at $8/USD month). For businesses currently utilising Plus, Team, or Enterprise accounts, the experience is expected to remain ad-free for the time being.

OpenAI is emphasising transparency and integrity. The company has stated that ads will be clearly labelled and, most importantly, will not influence the answers generated by the AI. The ads will appear below the main response, ensuring the core utility of the search or query remains objective.

Conversational ads

For marketers and business leaders, the most intriguing development is the introduction of interactive ads. Unlike the static banners of the 2000s or the sponsored links of the 2010s, ChatGPT ads may allow users to chat directly with the ads.

Imagine a user asking for advice on the best CRM for a mid-sized law firm. Below the objective advice, an ad for a specific software provider might appear, allowing the user to ask, “Does your software integrate with my existing billing tool?” right within the interface. This creates a frictionless path from discovery to purchase decision, transforming the ad from a disruption into a conversational utility.

Privacy and profit

OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman has been vocal about maintaining user trust during this transition. The company has committed to keeping conversations private from advertisers and matching ads based on conversation topics through limited personalisation data rather than selling user identities.

Financially, the stakes are massive. Internal projections shared by the Financial Times suggest OpenAI expects to generate “low billions” in revenue from ads by 2026. This revenue stream is essential for the company to sustain the astronomical computing costs associated with scaling its models.

AI optimisation is the new black

As we look toward the future of digital presence, the arrival of ads on ChatGPT further signals that AI Optimisation (AIO) is becoming just as critical as Search Engine Optimisation (SEO).

For brands, placing interactive ads in chat tools is a new way to engage with audiences. The ability to provide real-time, conversational answers to prospective customers at the exact moment of intent is a powerful prospect.
