Imagine you’re hunting down a complex answer that’s more than just a quick fact—say you want to plan a weekend out in Melbourne, hopping between hidden coffee spots, local galleries and street art, then finding lunch and dinner options along the way. That’s exactly what Google says you can do now with AI Mode, which appeared in the Google Search bar on 8 October. And, according to our contacts at Google Sydney, this will soon replace search as we know it.
So what’s new? Unlike traditional search, where you type a few keywords, AI Mode allows you to ask longer, more complex questions (which testers are already doing—around three times the usual length). It also supports text, voice and image inputs, meaning you could snap a photo of a menu and ask what vegetarian options there are.
Behind the scenes, it uses a technique called “query fan-out”, which breaks your question into smaller bits, searches lots of things simultaneously and stitches them into a single helpful answer.
For businesses, this shift matters. It changes how people find and act on information, resulting in fewer quick clicks, more big questions, and deeper browsing. At LEP Digital, we’ve been aware of this change in both technology and user search behaviour for some time. Here’s how we’re responding.
In conclusion, search is evolving—from throwing keywords into a box to having real-world, natural conversations with your browser. Is your business prepared?
